The Director of Margin Effectiveness is a senior leader responsible for maximizing the company’s profitability through effective pricing and margin management. The role leads a team of approximately 15 professionals and owns key financial and commercial KPIs, including Gross Margin, Gross Profit, and Price Perception. This position plays a critical role in defining pricing and margin strategies, predicting revenue and margin trajectories, and influencing cross-functional commercial decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Pricing & Margin Strategy
- Define, own, and continuously refine the company-wide pricing and margin strategy aligned with overall business and financial objectives.
- Set clear margin and pricing guardrails to balance growth, competitiveness, and profitability.
- Translate strategic objectives into category-, segment-, and offer-level pricing frameworks.
- Ensure pricing strategy supports long-term value creation and sustainable margin performance.
Financial Performance & KPI Ownership
- Own and deliver Gross Margin (GM), Gross Profit (GP), and price perception KPIs.
- Establish governance, targets, and performance tracking mechanisms for margin and pricing effectiveness.
- Monitor and explain performance variances versus plan, identifying risks and opportunities.
- Ensure accountability for margin outcomes across commercial teams.
Revenue & Margin Forecasting
- Lead the development of revenue and margin forecasting models, including scenario and sensitivity analyses.
- Predict and communicate expected trajectories of revenues, margins, and profitability.
- Provide forward-looking insights to support strategic and operational decision-making.
- Ensure forecasts are integrated into planning, budgeting, and commercial execution processes.
Offer, Category & Segmentation Management
- Oversee pricing and offer management across categories, customer segments, and channels.
- Define segmentation logic and pricing differentiation based on customer value, willingness to pay, and competitive dynamics.
- Ensure coherence between base pricing, promotional pricing, and overall offer architecture.
- Optimize portfolio and offer mix to maximize margin and perceived customer value.
Price Perception & Market Competitiveness
- Manage and improve price perception of the company’s offer across key customer segments.
- Monitor competitive pricing, market trends, and customer feedback to inform pricing decisions.
- Define and track price perception metrics and translate insights into actionable initiatives.
- Ensure alignment between pricing strategy, brand positioning, and marketing communication.
Technology, Tools & Capability Development
- Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of pricing and margin management technologies including price segmentation and pricing engine
- Define functional and analytical requirements for pricing tools, data models, and automation.
- Drive adoption of advanced analytics and digital solutions to enhance pricing decision-making.
- Build scalable capabilities and processes to support long-term pricing excellence.
Cross-functional Collaboration & Influence
- Act as a key business partner to Sales, Marketing, Promotions, Finance, and Strategy teams.
- Influence commercial decisions to ensure alignment with pricing and margin objectives.
- Support trade-off decisions between volume, revenue growth, competitiveness, and margin.
- Facilitate alignment across functions in a matrix environment with shared accountability.
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, develop, and inspire a team of approximately 15 pricing and margin professionals.
- Build strong talent pipelines, capabilities, and succession plans within the function.
- Foster a performance-driven, data-oriented, and collaborative team culture.
- Ensure clear priorities, accountability, and continuous development of team members.
Key Requirements
- Minimum 6+ years of professional experience. Preferred experience in retail, FMCG, ecommerce, consulting, finance or VC / start-up
- Proven experience in pricing, margin and revenue management, finance, or commercial strategy roles.
- Strong track record of owning and delivering Gross Margin and Gross Profit targets in a fast paced and complex organization.
- Experience leading and developing medium-sized teams (5+ people).
- Strong analytical skills, including forecasting, modeling, and performance tracking. Tech acumen is significant advantage
- Deep understanding of pricing strategy, price perception, and category/segment-based offer management.
- Experience with pricing, revenue management, analytics technologies and tools.
- Ability to influence and collaborate with senior stakeholders across Sales, Marketing, and Commercial functions.
- Strategic mindset combined with strong execution and communication skills.
